Continuing care
Prevention is the cornerstone of our practice. Routine dental check-ups (continuing care) allow us to monitor and examine your child’s teeth and gums. We will also be able to detect and correct any small problems before they become major ones. Regular professional removal of plaque is also important in preventing decay and gum disease.
In a nutshell, 6 months in a child’s life is a long time. If you can imagine, 6 months in a 5 year old is 10% of their life! As such, lots of changes can occur in such a time frame in a growing child.
A child’s jaw and mouth commensurately change with every growth spurt. Naturally, this impacts the angle and the interplay between primary and adult teeth below the gum line.
Furthermore, despite all efforts, it is common for kids to consume treats containing hidden or added sugars. Often, they may not conscientiously adhere to a good oral hygiene. This can lead to a build-up of plaque – a well-known precursor to cavities and inflamed gums.
Additionally, regular radiographs (X-rays) are critical in revealing what is occurring below the gum line in terms of decay or cavities, as well as the angles at which the adult teeth may emerge. These play a large role in determining the steps to create the best outcome for your child.
A dental visit every six months comprising of a thorough, professional clean is a very effective way of removing cumulative plaque. That being said, we will certainly be developing a treatment plan specifically to cater for your child so that their needs can be sufficiently met. A professional oral exam and any early interventions with adherence to a good oral hygiene can ensure health smiles and plays a large role in minimising costly future treatment.
